Pyrite Sun Disk Fossil

One of the most unusual and striking varieties of Pyrite are these disk-shaped pyrite "suns", also known as pyrite dollars, which exhibit striations radiating out from the centre like rays of the sun. They are a rich pyrite gold colour - on some new PC screens our crystals may appear more bleached than they lovely rich colours. They are recovered from underground coal mines, where they occur in narrow, compacted seams of slate inter bedded in 300 million-year-old coal deposits in the USA.

The creation of iron pyrite suns is debated. Some believe they originated as fossils that were subsequently replaced with pyrite. Others believe they are concretions spread out under pressure and forced to grow in a laterally compressed, radiating manner in the seams of slate. Dimension are for the right pyrite sun disk (this has now sold buy we have another in the same shape available to buy here). This is the last one we bought a group a few years ago I just found this tucked in an overlooked storage box! It is viewable at St Leonards. Discounted as not in top shiny condition and a possible repair on one edge corner.
